NOT YOUR AVERAGE THIRST TRAP
REGINALD THE VAMPIRE MASTERFULLY COMBINES COMEDY AND HORROR THROUGH THE POV OF THE MAIN CHARACTER, REGINALD, THE JOLLY “SLUSHY SHACK” EMPLOYEE WHO NEVER REALLY ‘WANTED’ TO BE A VAMPIRE. HOWEVER, THAT BITE SAVED HIS LIFE, SO HE CLUMSILY NAVIGATES VAMPIRE LIFE THE BEST HE CAN. THE SHOW IS FUN and DOESN’T TAKE ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY, BUT STILL MANAGES TO TICK all THE HORROR BOXES THAT FANS LOVE. CREATING A visual IDENTITY THAT THREADED THE NEEDLE OF THESE TWO GENRES WAS TRICKY, BUT WE’re really happy with THE RESULTS.
WHILE THE SERIES EMBRACES BLOOD AND GUTS, IT WAS IMPERATIVE THAT we ESCHEW ANY blood and GORE. WHAT COULD TAKE THE PLACE OF BLOOD AND COMMUNICATE THE SAME, METAPHORIC IDEA? OUR DESIGN AND ANIMATION TEAMS FOUND INSPIRATION IN REGINALD’S EMPLOYER, THE ‘SLUSHY SHACK’. OUR CONCEPTUAL DIRECTION, ‘TRIP HOP’, CREATES AMBIGUOUS LIQUID drips and DROPS, VIA WARPING TYPOGRAPHY over LIVE-ACTION AND PHOTOGRAPHIC BACKPLATES. IT BECAME THE PERFECT VISUAL DEVICE THAT GIVES A NOD TO THE SINISTER UNDERPINNINGS OF THE VAMPIRE LIFESTYLE, WHILE STILL RETAINING A SENSE OF PSYCHEDELIC PLAYFULNESS.
